Construction Junction: Session 1 Educational Design and Building

The Construction Junction workshop's first session, titled Educational Design and Building provided an opportunity for everyone to introduce themselves. We went on a tour of various educational islands in SL to see different design techniques being used to develop virtual educational environments. At each location we discussed what we felt the designer's purpose was in the build or virutal space created.

Once we got back to the skybox, on Predentia island, we reviewed some of the basic building skills required for the activities in session 1. The activities for this session are the creation of a t-shirt and a bag for the t-shirt. Shown below is my first attemp at making a t-shirt for ECMM. I am not sure if this will be the final product but it is a start.

How cool is this? That you are making time to record your observations here. And I know you won't hold back; anyone investing themselves in SL - as you are - would certainly have some hard won opinions.

Now, where can a rezident get one of those snazzy ECMM t-shirts?

Very cool - glad to have you back in the blogosphere. ECMM members get free t-shirts right?;)
I'll be watching anxiously for the re-build. I've only briefly visited SL since we lost our building - I'm a homebuddy at heart and always liked to know there was a safe and welcoming place to light from.

Well, good to hear from you both! Once I complete the final design of the t-shirt you will be able to pick it up from the ECMM space on the U of S property in SL. Any suggestions on the design at this point?

Cindy, I found your comment about being a "homebuddy" interesting. I found that I was the same way. I hated wondering around aimlessly without a place to call home. In much of the research, I am finding the idea of home or communal social space for instructors and students to share to be an important design consideration. A place to call home allows for students and instructors to become more familiar with each other (Robbins, 2006). Conklin(2006) stresses the importance of creating a safe home base in SL where students can set as home. A sense of home leads to a greater sense of trust for the instructor and increases teacher presence in the VLC (Robbins, 2006).
